About Lesson

The football breastfeeding position, also known as the clutch or underarm position, is a useful position for mothers who have had a cesarean birth, for those with large breasts, or for babies who need additional support. Here’s how you can achieve the football position:

Sit in a comfortable chair with good back support or position yourself on a bed or couch. Use pillows or cushions to support your back, arms, and the baby.

Hold your baby in a sideways position, facing outward, with their body tucked under your arm on the same side as the breast you’ll be nursing from. Imagine holding a football or clutching a handbag under your arm.

Support your baby’s head with your hand by placing your thumb behind their ear and your fingers supporting their neck. Ensure that your baby’s head is higher than their body and that their mouth is in line with your nipple.

Position a pillow or rolled-up blanket on your lap or under your arm for added support, if needed. This can help bring your baby closer to your breast and prevent strain on your back or neck.

Gently bring your baby towards your breast, allowing their mouth to open wide. Ensure that their lower lip and tongue are positioned beneath the nipple, and their top lip flanges outward.

Support your breast with your free hand, if necessary, to guide your baby’s mouth onto the nipple and areola for a deep latch. Use your fingers to hold your breast in a way that doesn’t interfere with your baby’s ability to latch properly.

Check that your baby’s chin is touching your breast, and their nose is not blocked, allowing them to breathe comfortably while nursing.

Use your free hand to provide additional support to your baby’s body, such as supporting their back, bottom, or legs, depending on what feels comfortable for you and your baby.

If you need to switch sides or if your baby finishes nursing on one breast, you can reposition yourself and your baby to the other breast using the football hold on the opposite side.

Remember to adjust the position as needed to ensure both you and your baby are comfortable and properly aligned.
