Balancing work and pumping can be challenging, but with some planning and organization, it is possible to continue breastfeeding and provide expressed breast milk for your baby. Here are some tips for working and pumping:

Start pumping before you return to work: It’s beneficial to start building a stash of expressed breast milk before you go back to work. You can begin pumping once or twice a day after breastfeeding sessions to collect and store milk in the freezer.

Get familiar with your workplace policies: Familiarize yourself with your workplace policies regarding pumping and breastfeeding. Find out if there is a designated pumping area, how often and for how long you are allowed to pump, and if there are any storage options for your milk.

Invest in a quality breast pump: A good quality electric breast pump can make your pumping sessions more efficient and comfortable. Consider investing in a double electric pump, which allows you to express milk from both breasts simultaneously.

Create a pumping schedule: Establish a pumping schedule that aligns with your work hours and your baby’s feeding routine. Aim to pump every 2-3 hours, or as close to your baby’s usual feeding schedule as possible, to maintain your milk supply.

Find a comfortable and private pumping space: Locate a clean and private area at your workplace where you can comfortably pump. If there isn’t a designated lactation room, speak with your employer to find a suitable space, such as a conference room or an unused office.

Stay hydrated and well-nourished: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, as it can help with milk production. Additionally, ensure you have nutritious meals and snacks to support your energy levels and overall well-being.

Store and transport your milk properly: Use breast milk storage bags or containers to store your expressed milk. Label each container with the date and time of pumping. If you need to transport the milk home, use a cooler bag with ice packs to keep it fresh.

Maintain a consistent pumping routine: Try to pump at the same times each day to maintain a consistent milk supply. Regular pumping sessions, even during weekends and days off, can help keep your milk production stable.

Seek support and resources: Connect with other breastfeeding and working moms for support and advice. Join online support groups or consider reaching out to a lactation consultant or breastfeeding support organization for guidance and assistance.
