Creating Spooktacular Toffee Apples

Toffee apples are a traditional delight for Halloween, yet they can sometimes be overly sugary or challenging for small teeth to bite into due to their thickness. This recipe presents a lighter, thinner toffee coating that’s ideal for exciting children on a chilly evening. You can prepare these toffee apples up to 2 days in advance.

Ingredients:

  • 8 to 10 eating apples, washed and dried
  • 450g brown sugar
  • 50g butter
  • 1 tbsp golden syrup
  • 150ml water

Instructions:

Step 1:

  1. Insert sturdy wooden sticks, chopsticks, or twigs into the apples.
  2. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Step 2:

  1. Combine the sugar, butter, golden syrup, and water in a heavy saucepan.
  2. Gently heat the mixture while stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Allow it to boil without stirring until the temperature reaches 143°C on a sugar thermometer. If you don’t have a thermometer, watch for the sugar syrup to turn brown in the pan. It’s ready when a small drop of the syrup hardens instantly when placed in a cup of very cold water.

Step 3:

  1. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  2. Holding the apples by their sticks, cautiously dip them into the hot toffee mixture. Swirl them around to coat, allowing any excess to drip off. Reheat the toffee if it becomes too thick.

Step 4:

  1. Place the toffee-coated apples on the parchment-lined baking tray to set.
