How Long Will I Have Morning Sickness?

 

Experiencing morning sickness during early pregnancy is common, but its duration can vary. For most, it subsides by the 3-month mark, but for some, it may persist into the 2nd trimester or even throughout the entire pregnancy. Here’s what you need to know:

When Does Morning Sickness Typically End? Morning sickness usually clears up by weeks 12-14 or the end of the first trimester.

Can It Stop Suddenly? Yes, morning sickness can cease suddenly or gradually fade away.

Can It Come and Go? Pregnancy nausea can fluctuate and may not be a daily occurrence, influenced by various factors like diet.

Is It Harmful to the Baby? In general, morning sickness does not harm the baby. However, if you have severe and constant vomiting, it may indicate Hyperemesis Gravidarum, a condition requiring medical attention.

When to See a Doctor:

  • In you cannot cope with constant sickness and it affects your daily life.
  • If you experience symptoms such as dark-coloured urine, prolonged absence of urination, weakness, dizziness, tummy ache, high fever, or vomiting blood.

Hyperemesis Gravidarum, a severe form of pregnancy sickness, may require hospitalization for intravenous fluids.

Remember, while morning sickness can be challenging, your baby will still receive the necessary nutrients from your body stores. Eat what you can and don’t worry too much about the variety of foods you consume. If morning sickness becomes overwhelming, don’t hesitate to consult your Family Doctor, Midwife or Obstetrician for guidance and possible medication.
